The Birth of a Nation essays The Birth of a Nation: Does the Portrayal of the Ku Klux Klan In this controversial 1915 film compare to documented history of the organization? D.W. Griffith was raised in South Carolina by his father who was an ex-confederate soldier. Griffith was raised to believe that fathers views on the superiority white race and the strength of the Confederacy were the natural and correct beliefs. And, when his father joined the Ku Klux Klan, the young boy was introduced to a magnified degree of racism and white supremacy. However, he was blinded from the reality of the situation. When Griffith created the film, Birth of a Nation, he based it on a glorified version of the KKK and their attempt to preserve the peace of the Confederacy, but fails to show the horrors created by the organization during their crusade. In the film, Birth of a Nation, it is explained how when the blacks are given a right to vote, and an election for a senator takes place. A power-hungry mulatto man was elected. The Clan agreed that he had triggered the fermentation of their peaceful state. They believed the blacks were electing leaders who were destroying the Confederacy. In order to prevent the blacks from voting for the Radical Republican Candidates, the Klansmen lingered around the voting booths in atop their horses and in costume to intimidate the black voters. In reality, not only did the Klan use their presence to frighten the blacks from voting, they also used violence. In some cases, the Klan proved their seriousness by murdering important leaders of the black community and members of the Radical Republic Government. In the film, the Klans violent action was under-exaggerated in order to withhold the dignity of the Klan for those who did not believe such actions were justified. But, if you want a pet, there is one thing you shouldnt do. You should never take an animal from the wild, and keep them as pets. The reasons are pretty clear. I, myself, have learned from self-experience that they are tougher to take care of than your average cat, dog, bird, or fish. They are not used to a captive environment. This can be bad, considering that its probably not how they were meant to live. Another thing is that you may not be able to get as much information on the wild pet, because they simply arent meant to be one. You would be able to find much more information on domesticated animals; hence, you can take better care of a domesticated pet, rather than a wild one. Wild animals are scared easier. How many times have you approached a pond without all of the frogs jumping in the water? How many times have you actually been close to catching a bird or fish with your bare hands? (Well, I have, but thats another story.) Chances are that the animal will run, fly, or swim away. If cornered, it will attack out of self-defense. That brings me to another point. If you cant find that animal in a legal pet store, it is probably too dangerous to keep for a pet. Many wild animals have poisonous venom, or deadly scratches and bites. This can be very dangerous. Something close to that point is that the animal may be rabid, have salmonella, or some other dangerous decease or virus. The probability of this is much less if your pet is a domesticated animal that was legally bought. If you or your family get hurt or killed, just remember that you cant sue Mother Nature. I think my point is pretty clear. Dont take animals from the wild and keep them as your own pet. Am I, however, telling you not to get a pet at all? No. As a matter of fact, I am encouraging you to get one! Just as long as it is not from the wild.

Today IVF is a multibillion-dollar, international business providing healthy children to caring parents. Dolly was not the product of sperm and eggs, rather she was an exact clone of her "donor parent". Although definitions of legal insanity differ from state to state, generally a person is considered insane and is not responsible for criminal conduct if, at the time of the offense, as a result of a severe mental disease or defect, he was unable to appreciate the nature and quality or the wrongfulness of his acts. This reasoning is, because willfull intent is an essential part of most offenses, a person who is insane is not capable of forming such intent. Mental disease or defect does not alone constitute a legal insanity defense. The defendant has the burden of proving the defense of insanity by clear and convincing evidence. The history of the insanity defense in modern times comes from the 1843 case of Daniel MNaghten, who tried to assassinate the prime minister of Britain and was found not guilty because he was insane at the time. The public outrage after his acquittal prompted the creation of a strict definition of legal insanity which is known as the MNaghten Rule. The MNaghten Rule basically said a person was not legally insane unless he is incapable of appreciating his surroundings because of a powerful mental delusion. The Durham Standard The Durham standard was a much more lenient guideline for the insanity defense, but it addressed the issue of convicting mentally ill defendants, which was allowed under the MNaghten Rule. However, the Durham standard drew much criticism because of its expansive definition of legal insanity. The Model Penal Code, published by the American Law Institute, provided a standard for legal insanity that was a compromise between the strict MNaghten Rule and the lenient Durham ruling. Under the MPC standard, a defendant is not responsible for criminal conduct if at the time of such conduct as a result of mental disease or defect he lacks substantial capacity either to appreciate the criminality of his conduct or to conform his conduct to the requirements of the law. The MPC Standard The MPC standard was popular until 1981, when John Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity under those guidelines for the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan. Again, public outrage at Hinckleys acquittal caused lawmakers to pass legislation that reverted back to the strict MNaghten standard, and some states attempted to abolish the insanity defense altogether. Today the standard for proving legal insanity varies widely from state to state, but most jurisdictions have returned to a more strict interpretation of the definition.
