The premise of emotional intelligence in leadership is that emotional intelligence should be the premise of leadership. Before tasks, followers, goals and styles can be defined or critiqued, the leader’s emotional intelligence must first be assessed (Goleman, Boyatzis McKee, 2002, pg 5). Emotional intelligence then becomes the predictor of how effectively the leader will be able to lead in any given situation, set of tasks or followers. In this paper, the author will compare this premise of emotional intelligence with the Leader-member exchange (LMX) theory and the situational approach to leadership (Northouse, 2010). The LMX contrasts with emotional intelligence in that the LMX is founded on a different premise. The LMX is a leadership theory that describes both the two-way exchange between leaders and followers, and the amount of influence one has on the other (Northhouse, 2010). As a theory, the LMX is less a model for leadership, and more a description of a particular leadership dynamic that offers â€Å"insights that managers could use to improve their own leadership behavior† (Northouse, 2010, pg. 157). Central to the LMX are the in- and out-groups: a relational distinction based upon the follower’s choice to either fulfill or exceed his or her job expectations given the opportunity by the leader (Northouse, 2010). If the follower is exceptional beyond basic tasks, the theory posits, then that individual is considered to be in the in-group. In the in-group, the leader is more likely to give administrative preference to that individual, and will also allow that individual to influence the decisions the leader makes (Northouse, 2010). Conversely, members in the out-group are comp etent subordinates, but do not expand the scope of their responsibilities beyond that which is clearly defined (Northouse, 2010). Below are some of the recommendations which can help in resolving the ethical issues of nanotechnology for a better future in the field of technology- Products that are based on nanoparticles and nanostructured composites are already available in the market and some of them are in the pipeline, it is recommended that there is a need to define new standards with the objective of safety testing concerns of these products and their erosion and also these standards should be made basic for new regulations. Moreover, there is a need to conduct a research in nanoparticle toxicology as it was a type of much too long neglected research. In addition to this, research has to be conducted in the methods for making nanoparticles safe by encapsulation and surface treatment. With the objective of coping up and addressing the issue of control and responsibility over new nanotechnology devices, it is recommended that strict regulations are required to be introduced which will help in defining the level of necessary control possessed by the human. The scope will be defining the level of tasks allowed by devices and will also assign clear reporting responsibilities to the users and producers of nanotechnology devices. It is also recommended that the new devices which are being developed have to be accompanied with methods and instruments which can further help in disabling and detecting these nanotechnology devices. To Kill A Mockingbird In the classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, there are two families that are textbook examples of complete opposites on the moral ladder, and in the community. The Cunninghams and the Ewells have two distinctly different reputations. The Cunninghams, although extremely poor, are highly respected throughout Maycomb County. The Ewells, being just as poor as the Cunninghams, are deeply despised. The Cunninghams are very respected by the citizens of Maycomb. They take nothing, unless they can pay it back, and that is virtually nothing. On the first day of school, the youngest of the Cunningham family, Walter, had no lunch. The new teacher didn't know the ways of Maycomb, or the Cunninghams. She tried to offer Walter money to buy lunch, and could not comprehend why he could not accept. Scout tries to explain to Ms. Caroline, "Walter's one of the Cunninghams, Ms. Caroline...The Cunninghams never took nothin' they can't give back-no church baskets, no scrip stamps. They never took nothing off anybody, they get along with what they have. They don't have much, but they get along on it." Walter knew he could not pay back the quarter, so he did not take it. On that same first day of class, Bob Ewell's son Burris also had an altercation with Miss Caroline. She asked him to go home and wash his hair with lye soap, and then treat his scalp with kerosene to get rid of the "cooties." Burris would have none of it. Walter Cunningham(Sr.), along with most whites before the trial, believed Tom Robinson to be guilty. He showed up at the jail where Tom Robinson was being held, with all intentions to kill Tom. After a one sided conversation with Scout, Mr. Cunningham realizes that he has no reason to be at the jail, and has even less of a reason to use his rifle. Bob Ewell cost Maycomb two lives, while Mr. Cunningham, at least for a while, saved one. Among the many things Bob Ewell had little value for, human existence proved to be right at the top. After finding his daughter Mayella kissing Tom Robinson (a black man), Bob accused Tom of raping and beating his daughter, though he had done it himself. After being found guilty, Tom Robinson was shot while supposedly trying to escape. All Bob Ewell could think about however was the fact that his word was held in only a slightly higher standing than that of a black man. He tried to kill Scout and Jem for retribution against Atticus, but eventually was killed himself by Aurthur "Boo" Radley.

Griffith was raised in South Carolina by his father who was an ex-confederate soldier. Griffith was raised to believe that fathers views on the superiority white race and the strength of the Confederacy were the natural and correct beliefs. And, when his father joined the Ku Klux Klan, the young boy was introduced to a magnified degree of racism and white supremacy. However, he was blinded from the reality of the situation. When Griffith created the film, Birth of a Nation, he based it on a glorified version of the KKK and their attempt to preserve the peace of the Confederacy, but fails to show the horrors created by the organization during their crusade. In the film, Birth of a Nation, it is explained how when the blacks are given a right to vote, and an election for a senator takes place. A power-hungry mulatto man was elected. The Clan agreed that he had triggered the fermentation of their peaceful state. They believed the blacks were electing leaders who were destroying the Confederacy. In order to prevent the blacks from voting for the Radical Republican Candidates, the Klansmen lingered around the voting booths in atop their horses and in costume to intimidate the black voters. In reality, not only did the Klan use their presence to frighten the blacks from voting, they also used violence. In some cases, the Klan proved their seriousness by murdering important leaders of the black community and members of the Radical Republic Government. In the film, the Klans violent action was under-exaggerated in order to withhold the dignity of the Klan for those who did not believe such actions were justified. But, if you want a pet, there is one thing you shouldnt do. You should never take an animal from the wild, and keep them as pets. The reasons are pretty clear. I, myself, have learned from self-experience that they are tougher to take care of than your average cat, dog, bird, or fish. They are not used to a captive environment. This can be bad, considering that its probably not how they were meant to live. Another thing is that you may not be able to get as much information on the wild pet, because they simply arent meant to be one. You would be able to find much more information on domesticated animals; hence, you can take better care of a domesticated pet, rather than a wild one. Wild animals are scared easier. How many times have you approached a pond without all of the frogs jumping in the water? How many times have you actually been close to catching a bird or fish with your bare hands? (Well, I have, but thats another story.) Chances are that the animal will run, fly, or swim away. If cornered, it will attack out of self-defense. That brings me to another point. If you cant find that animal in a legal pet store, it is probably too dangerous to keep for a pet. Many wild animals have poisonous venom, or deadly scratches and bites. This can be very dangerous. Something close to that point is that the animal may be rabid, have salmonella, or some other dangerous decease or virus. The probability of this is much less if your pet is a domesticated animal that was legally bought. If you or your family get hurt or killed, just remember that you cant sue Mother Nature. I think my point is pretty clear. Dont take animals from the wild and keep them as your own pet. Am I, however, telling you not to get a pet at all? No. As a matter of fact, I am encouraging you to get one! Just as long as it is not from the wild.

Today using IVF, a couple with fertility problems can give their own genetic material in the form of sperm and eggs to a clinic, combine them to create embryos, and insert the embryos into a mother’s womb. Society accepts an individuals right to provide their own genetic material to an IVF clinic and create children. Today IVF is a multibillion-dollar, international business providing healthy children to caring parents. In 1997 another explosion of public consciousness occurred when the Roslin Institute announced they had successfully cloned a sheep named Dolly. Dolly was not the product of sperm and eggs, rather she was an exact clone of her "donor parent". The embryo of Dolly was created from genetic material of a donor "parent" and implanted into a surrogate mother. Dolly and her "donor parent" currently live as the property of the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, UK. As owner of sheep, Roslin possessed the right to collect genetic material, perform research, and eventually produce a cloned animal. Today this right of ownership is currently accepted by society. The Insanity Defense in Criminal Cases The standard for claiming a defendant is not guilty by reason of insanity has changed through the years from strict guidelines to a more lenient interpretation, and back to a more strict standard again. Although definitions of legal insanity differ from state to state, generally a person is considered insane and is not responsible for criminal conduct if, at the time of the offense, as a result of a severe mental disease or defect, he was unable to appreciate the nature and quality or the wrongfulness of his acts. This reasoning is, because willfull intent is an essential part of most offenses, a person who is insane is not capable of forming such intent. Mental disease or defect does not alone constitute a legal insanity defense. The defendant has the burden of proving the defense of insanity by clear and convincing evidence. The history of the insanity defense in modern times comes from the 1843 case of Daniel MNaghten, who tried to assassinate the prime minister of Britain and was found not guilty because he was insane at the time. The public outrage after his acquittal prompted the creation of a strict definition of legal insanity which is known as the MNaghten Rule. The MNaghten Rule basically said a person was not legally insane unless he is incapable of appreciating his surroundings because of a powerful mental delusion. The Durham Standard The Durham standard was a much more lenient guideline for the insanity defense, but it addressed the issue of convicting mentally ill defendants, which was allowed under the MNaghten Rule. However, the Durham standard drew much criticism because of its expansive definition of legal insanity. The Model Penal Code, published by the American Law Institute, provided a standard for legal insanity that was a compromise between the strict MNaghten Rule and the lenient Durham ruling. Under the MPC standard, a defendant is not responsible for criminal conduct if at the time of such conduct as a result of mental disease or defect he lacks substantial capacity either to appreciate the criminality of his conduct or to conform his conduct to the requirements of the law. The MPC Standard The MPC standard was popular until 1981, when John Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity under those guidelines for the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan. Again, public outrage at Hinckleys acquittal caused lawmakers to pass legislation that reverted back to the strict MNaghten standard, and some states attempted to abolish the insanity defense altogether. Today the standard for proving legal insanity varies widely from state to state, but most jurisdictions have returned to a more strict interpretation of the definition.
